Amsterdam activist can be extradited to Sweden

Today we received the verdict about the extradition of 22 year old Amsterdam activist Maarten Blok. Sweden has asked for Maarten's extradition because of the events during the EuroSummit in Goteborg in 2001. He is suspected of having participated in a violent disturbance and having hit a police officer. The court has decided it finds the extradition acceptable. It does however advise minister Donner not to extradite Maarten before the date of the Swedish court's session is known, so the duration of Maarten's being on remand will be limited. It remains unclear when the court case in Sweden is to take place.

The court further judged that the facts of which Maarten is suspected should be classified as singular abuse, not grievous abuse as the accusation claims.

Maarten is considering appealing against the verdict. He has two weeks to do this. Background information about the case can be found on www.steunmaarten.org
