Here's a brief report on the second day of Maarten's trial.
To start with: Maarten is free!!!!Read
te report from the Gothenburg Courthouse, here..
After the judge acquitted him, he got his personal effects back on the
spot and could walk outside, to everyone's great joy, of course. At this
moment (4 p.m.) we are all still recovering a bit; later on today we're
heading back in the bus, with Maarten, to Amsterdam, where we will arrive
tomorrow.
After it already turned out yesterday that the four police witnesses had
a very unconvincing story, the defence demonstrated today that the policeman
who claimed to have been hit on the head had lied in his sworn statement.
After this was demonstrated, the prosecutor no longer had a case at all.
The witnesses called by Maarten only made the defence's case stronger.
Ultimately, the prosecutor had to admit a reasonable doubt as to whether
Maarten had done it, and that in fact it might well have been another
person. He therefore was not prepared to request sentencing, and left
the matter in the judge's hands. The judge went into recess in order to
consider whether he wanted to pronounce a verdict immediately or next
week.
A half hour later his liberatory answer arrived: it cannot be proved without
a reasonable doubt that Maarten had done it, and so the case must be closed,
Maarten is acquitted.
that's it for now, greetings from Maarten!
